GSK the makers of the denture adhesive Super Poligrip, Ultra Fresh and original Polgrip have voluntarily stopped distributing and manufacturing all of their products, due to their zinc content. They have found out through their research that using products containing zinc for several years or longer can lead to excessive levels of zinc in the blood, which can cause certain neurological symptoms. Zinc cannot be absorbed through the mouth unless it is swallowed, so using small amounts of the adhesive as directed is not considered to be harmful. Patients who have ill fitting dentures and have used these products more than once a day have been advised to consult with their dentist for advice. GSK has advised patients who of used these products in excess for several years with concerns about their health to discontinue use, consult their physician and use a zinc free alternative.
