The inside of your tooth contains soft tissue that consists of vessels and nerves. This is called the pulp. The pulp extends through the root canal to the tip of the root that lies in the bone of the jaw. When the pulp becomes diseased or injured it dies. There are many things that can cause the nerve to die. Common causes are a cracked tooth, deep cavityand trauma to the tooth, all of which can allow bacteria to enter into the pulp. When this happens the root of tooth gets infected and can cause an abscess, resulting in pain and swelling. Even if you have no pain the bacteria can damage the bone that anchors the tooth in the jaw. If the tooth is left untreated you run the risk of it being so decayed it would need to be extracted. Your dentist will let you know if they are able to treat your tooth. Sometimes the dentist will refer you to a specialist called an endodontist who only treats root canals. In any case it is very important to routinely see your dentist so that you do not have any dental issues.
